该剧改编自清闲丫头所著同名小说。故事延续第一部的剧情，讲述三法司少年团联手“攘外”，将一个个看似毫无关联的案件抽丝剥茧、扎根串联，护百姓安宁，更守家国平安的故事。
1945年，艰苦卓绝的抗日战争取得伟大胜利，中国在和平与战争、光明与黑暗等重大问题上，面临艰难抉择。以毛泽东、周恩来、朱德、刘少奇为首的中国共产党人，以人民为中心，与以蒋介石为首的国民党独裁者展开大决战。毛泽东以大无畏气概，孤身涉险赴重庆谈判，指挥解放军抢占东北、转战陕北、发起三大战役、进行土地革命，发布“五一口号”。中国共产党的政策，赢得广大人民群众和民主党派的欢迎拥护，最终战胜了蒋介石王朝。1949年10月1日，中华人民共和国宣告成立。
10 years after Martin Shaw turned the beloved Inspector Gently novels into a hit BBC One TV series, filming has begun on two final feature-length episodes. Back in action one last time will be Shaw as the eponymous inspector, who is tested like never before just as he winds down his career. In the first of two films - Gently Liberated - the inspector and his trusted allies Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) and Coles (Lisa McGrillis) are brought in to investigate a possible "miscarriage of justice". However, their final case in Gently and the New Age has the Met's new Special Investigations Squad boss Lister bringing in the inspector to investigate high levels of corruption within the force. Both of these mini-movies will be set in 1970, as the women's liberation movement and the rise of the Conservative Party bring clashing values to Britain.
遺体や遺品に触れると死者の魂のイメージが脳内に浮かぶ特殊能力＝フラッシュバックを持つ刑事と、AI（人工知能）開発でノーベル賞を教授に横取りされた先端科学研究所の研究員がバディを組み、猟奇殺人事件の裏に潜む「歴史の真実」を暴いていくサスペンスエンターテイメントドラマ。成田が特殊能力を持つ刑事・加々美稜真（かがみりょうま）役、高梨が先端研の天才研究員・轟日見子（とどろきひみこ）役を演じる。
